Grid Pulse combines three public APIs to build a full picture of Great Britain's electricity grid, plus EirGrid's Smart Grid Dashboard for Ireland, the EIA API for the USA, IESO for Ontario (Canada), the Open Electricity API for Australia's National Electricity Market, and the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform for eleven more European countries. Nothing here is proprietary - the GB feeds are the same ones that power Kate Morley's original National Grid: Live.

Numbers here occasionally differ from grid.iamkate.com, even though the sources match. See why on the About page →

The ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, the pan-European grid data hub, powers the Ireland page's SEM price and generation-mix figures, plus eleven standalone country pages: five for Great Britain's direct electrical interconnectors (France, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Denmark), and six more added purely for cross-country comparison, with no electrical link to GB (Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Portugal and Poland). See the country sections below for exactly what is live on each.

Canada, Australia and South America have also been added, but at different stages: Ontario (Canada) has a working live feed via IESO, and Australia's National Electricity Market has a working live feed via the Open Electricity API; Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia are informational pages only, with no live data wired up yet. See the Canada, Australia and South America sections below.

Great Britain

Reports power generation connected to the national transmission network, interconnector imports and exports, and wholesale pricing.

JSON 5-30 min granularity Refreshed every 15 min

Used for: generation by fuel type, interconnector flows, pumped storage, market price.

Licence requirement: Elexon's licence requires the following statement: Contains BMRS data © Elexon Limited copyright and database right 2026.

Estimates power generation from embedded solar and wind - generation connected to the local distribution network rather than the national transmission network, which Elexon does not directly measure.

CSV 30 min granularity Revised retrospectively

Used for: embedded solar and wind estimates, demand.

A project by the National Energy System Operator and the University Of Oxford Department Of Computer Science, estimating the carbon intensity of electricity generation in grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour.

JSON 30 min granularity Refreshed every 30 min

Used for: emissions figures and historical carbon-intensity charts.

The project-by-project register of generation contracted to connect to Great Britain's transmission system - name, connection site, capacity, status, technology, and expected connection date.

CSV / API Project-level Updated twice weekly

Used for: context and citation on the 2030 GB plans page's grid connection queue section. Not wired into the live pipeline - it is a reference link, not a polled data source.

Ireland

The island of Ireland runs its own synchronous grid, so the GB sources above do not cover it. The Ireland page's demand, generation, wind, GB interconnection and emissions figures are live-wired to EirGrid's Smart Grid Dashboard; its SEM price stat, generation-mix breakdown, 24-hour mix chart and History section are now live too, via ENTSO-E (see the Europe section further down).

Live demand, generation, wind, GB interconnection and carbon intensity for the island of Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland together), published under EirGrid's Open Data Licence. Public and keyless.

JSON Refreshed every 15 min

Used for: Ireland's status-strip stats and their 3-hour sparklines.

Attribution required by the licence: "Supported by EirGrid Group Data" - included in the Ireland page's footer.

SONI

EirGrid's Northern Ireland transmission system operator counterpart - jointly manages the Single Electricity Market (SEM) with EirGrid. Northern Ireland's contribution is already folded into the all-island EirGrid figures above rather than fetched separately.

Not called directly

Used for: covered via the all-island EirGrid feed.

SEMO

The Single Electricity Market Operator publishes wholesale day-ahead and intraday market pricing for the island of Ireland through its Website Report API. It is public and keyless, but the exact report identifier for day-ahead index prices is not confirmed yet.

Not currently called

Used for: nothing directly - the same SEM day-ahead price is also published via ENTSO-E (see the Europe section below), which is what the Ireland page's SEM price stat now actually uses.

USA

The US does not have a single national grid operator the way GB or Ireland do - it runs three separate interconnections and around 66 balancing authorities within them - so there is no single feed to point at. The USA page deliberately uses one source only, the EIA API below, for demand, generation, total interchange, the generation mix, the 24-hour mix chart and the History section (typically ~1 day behind). Wholesale price and emissions are not published by the EIA at all, so those two are shown as "not available" rather than a placeholder - see the USA page's own data sources section for exactly why.

EIA API

The US Energy Information Administration's own free API, including the Hourly Electric Grid Monitor (EIA-930) - the closest thing to a single national demand/generation figure, summing the lower-48 states' balancing authorities. Does not cover Alaska, Hawaii or US territories (they are outside EIA-930's balancing-authority coverage), and does not publish price or emissions data at all.

JSON/CSV Hourly, ~1 day lag Free, registration required

Used for: the USA page's demand, generation, total interchange, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History section. Requires the site operator's own free API key (see includes/config.php.example) - shows "not enough recorded history yet" rather than a placeholder figure if one is not set or ingestion has not run yet.

An open-source project (plus a hosted API with a free tier) that normalises near-real-time data from CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, NYISO and ISO-NE into one schema. Closer to real-time than the EIA, but covers specific regions rather than one national number.

JSON Near real-time Free tier: 500k rows/month

Used for: nothing - not used by this site. Showing seven-plus regional figures instead of one lower-48 total is not a trade-off this page makes; the USA page sticks to the single EIA source above by design.

Individual ISOs

CAISO's OASIS, ERCOT, PJM's Data Miner 2, NYISO and ISO-NE each publish their own free feeds directly - each with a different format, granularity and registration process, which is exactly the fragmentation gridstatus.io exists to paper over.

Varies by ISO Not currently called

Used for: nothing - same reasoning as gridstatus.io above, see the USA page's own data sources section for the full picture.

Europe (eleven countries, via ENTSO-E)

All eleven of these pages are powered by the single ENTSO-E source below rather than eleven separate integrations. The first five sit at the far end of one of Great Britain's direct electrical interconnectors; the other six have no electrical link to GB at all and are included purely so the Comparisons page has more to compare against:

GB-interconnected:

  • France (IFA / IFA2 / ElecLink) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Netherlands (BritNed) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Belgium (Nemo Link) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Norway (NO2) (North Sea Link) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Denmark (DK1) (Viking Link) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.

Not GB-interconnected - added for comparison only:

  • Germany - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Spain - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Italy - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Sweden (SE3) - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Portugal - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.
  • Poland - demand, generation, day-ahead price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History all live.

Emissions intensity and GB-specific interconnector flow are not published by ENTSO-E for any of these bidding zones, so rather than show a permanently illustrative placeholder for either, none of these eleven pages show them at all.

The pan-European grid data hub - every TSO connected to the Continental Europe or Nordic synchronous areas is required by EU regulation to publish here. Covers actual total load (demand), actual generation per fuel type, and day-ahead price, per bidding zone.

XML Load/generation: ~1-3hr lag. Price: daily Free, registration + email approval required

Used for: all eleven European country pages' demand, generation, price, mix, 24-hour mix chart and History, plus Ireland's SEM price and generation-mix gap-fill (see the Ireland section above). Requires the site operator's own free API token, obtained through a short registration-plus-email process - shows "not enough recorded history yet" rather than a placeholder figure on every page above if one is not set or ingestion has not run yet.

Canada

Canada has no single national grid operator - each province runs its own. The Canada page only covers Ontario, via its system operator IESO, and shows demand and generation mix live. Wholesale price, emissions and transfers are not available - see the Canada page's own data sources section for exactly why.

IESO

Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator publishes real-time demand and hourly generation-by-fuel-type reports. Public and keyless.

XML Demand: 5 min. Generation: hourly Free, keyless

Used for: the Canada page's demand, generation mix and History section (Ontario only). No price, emissions or interprovincial transfer figures - IESO's pricing is set through a complex multi-mechanism structure this install does not parse, and it does not publish an emissions figure at all. Only the "most recent" report aliases are polled, so History for this page builds up gradually over time rather than starting with years of backlog like the GB pages.

South America

Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia each have a real national system operator that publishes an open data portal, but none of the four is wired up to this site yet - building and testing a parser for each is real work that has not been done. Rather than fabricate figures or show a broken placeholder, the South America page instead gives real background on each country's grid and links directly to where its live data actually is:

None of these four sources are currently called by this site.

Americas interconnections

The Interconnections page is a reference page, not a live dashboard - it has no stats and calls no API. It summarises publicly documented facts about how North and South American grids are (and are not) electrically linked to each other, sourced from operator and industry publications rather than any single feed; see the page itself for its own source list. Nothing on that page, or on any Americas page, is electrically connected to Great Britain's grid - these countries are tracked purely so the Comparisons page has more to compare.

Australia

The Australia page covers AEMO's National Electricity Market (NEM) only - New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. It does not cover Western Australia (a separate market, the WEM) or the Northern Territory. Demand, a demand-weighted average spot price across the NEM's five regions, the generation mix, the 24-hour mix chart and the History section are all live.

Formerly OpenNEM - a free, well-documented REST API covering AEMO's National Electricity Market: 5-minute generation by facility/fuel technology, regional spot price and regional demand. Requires a free account and API key.

JSON 5 min Free, needs a key

Used for: the Australia page's demand, spot price, generation mix, 24-hour mix chart and History section. Requires the site operator's own free API key (see includes/config.php.example) - shows no live data until one is set and ingestion has run. Licence: CC BY-NC 4.0 (non-commercial use, with attribution) - stricter than every other source on this site, all of which are free for any use, including commercial. See About for the full disclosure.

Long-term history and cross-border flows

The "Long-term history" chart on each country page uses each country's official yearly statistics. The "Cross-border flows" cards on the European pages use ENTSO-E's physical flows. The site's scheduler fetches these slowly, one country or border at a time.

"Today so far", the day archive, the day pages and the "Records" boards are worked out from this site's own stored readings from the live sources above. So they only go back to when this site started recording each country.

The EU statistics office. Table nrg_bal_peh gives gross electricity production by fuel, per country and year. It covers whole countries, so Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the whole country, not just the price zone on the live page. Ireland is the Republic of Ireland only.

JSON-statYearly, about 1 to 2 years behindFree, no key. Reuse allowed with "Source: Eurostat"

Used for: the long-term history on the European country pages and Ireland. Format and totals checked against the live API on 1 November 2026. See Eurostat's copyright and reuse policy.

Great Britain's generation mix every half hour since 2009, from the National Energy System Operator. The site adds it up into yearly totals. Imports are left out.

CKAN datastore (SQL)Half-hourly, from 2009NESO Open Data Licence

Used for: the long-term history on the Great Britain home page. Column names and yearly totals checked on 1 November 2026.

Yearly US generation by fuel, all sectors, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

JSON (API v2)YearlyPublic domain. Needs the site's free EIA key

Used for: the long-term history on the USA page. Not shown yet: the figures still need checking against EIA's own published totals.

One XML report per year, with Ontario's hourly output by fuel. The site adds up each year, one file per run. The current year's file is the year so far.

XMLHourly, from 2015IESO terms of use for public reports

Used for: the long-term history on the Canada (Ontario) page. File names and format checked on 1 November 2026.

Yearly energy by fuel for the National Electricity Market (not Western Australia).

JSON (API v4)YearlyCC BY-NC 4.0, non-commercial use only

Used for: the long-term history on the Australia page. Not shown yet: the figures still need checking against Open Electricity's own published totals.

Measured electricity across each border, in each direction. The site fetches one border per scheduler run, so each border updates every few hours.

XMLHourlyENTSO-E Transparency Platform terms. Needs the site's free ENTSO-E token

Used for: the cross-border flow cards and net imports on the European country pages. Great Britain's cards use Elexon's interconnector figures, and Ireland's use EirGrid's.
